As lead singer of the band Beef I've always tried to look with a professional eye to all developments within the music industry.
My involvement in the mp3 download website www.PlayMeLoud.com gave me the possibilty to come up with a concept with the following basic philosophy:
Don't fight illegal downloading but try to make legal downloading more interesting and profitable through lots of extra's that come with a 0,99 euro download.
That's why in coorperation with PlayMeLoud.com the monthly Beef.nl Membership was brought to life with promising success.
Through downloading (pay-by-phone) any given Beef track by the use of www.PlayMeLoud.com and by sending the download code back to members@beef.nl, all downloaders automatically received exclusive, never released songs (like special demorecordings) in his or her mailbox.
They also received a monthlong 20% discount in the www.beef.nl webstore plus a possibility to get free tickets to any Beef liveshow (by registering for it). For each show we held there were 4 Membership tickets available.
Plus a chance to win prices such as, T-shirts, sweaters, cd's by the monthly lottery.
(More extra's can be added to a download like personalized emails/blogs from the band to the members)
And we have only received positive reactions. Several members wanted to pay 12 euro at once so, to automatically receive a membership for the entire year, because all these extra's make a download that has been paid for lots of fun and really worth it.
For practical reasons we haven't applied this option, for now.
This membership system is one I would love use myself because I have at least 5 bands I would like to receive extra's from every month for a total of 5 euro's
By itself has many postive 'side effects' like stimulating the bands income as well as chart aspirations and legal downloading in general.
For 2010 Beef has put the monthly memberships on hold, however, we've already inspired several bands to take comparable actions
And the band is sure to come back with theses memberships after a well deserved restperiod.
