With so many artists nowadays cluttering the industry it’s hard to rise to the surface and be noticed, especially when you’re indie.
The band ‘Buggles’ said it best in a prophetic way with their hit ‘Video Killed The Radio Star’; whether it’s good or bad is a personal opinion, but it’s obvious that the visual aspect is as important as the music itself. It’s already proven that a creative visual marketing campaign, viral or music video can push new acts to great heights; the combination of music/games has also proven to be a golden combination as a way to reach new audiences.
‘The Legacy Comic Contest’ is based on the idea of getting fans literally involved in a music project by giving them a chance to star as a character in The Legacy comic (next to Hip Hop pioneers Ice-T, De La Soul, Chuck D of Public Enemy, Big Daddy Kane, DJ Premier, Jeru the Damaja and of course Deams). This, without the necessity of having musical skills themselves.
The comic is the visual part of The Legacy EP & album with all the artists mentioned and will be cross medial exploited: as a physical comic, animation and iPhone application, scenes of the comic will also be used for t-shirts and posters. The contest and exploitation are truly interactive and can have as many sequels as we have the creativity.
The Legacy EP (09-09-09) promo video received attention on more than 600 music websites including AllHipHop.com; at five million visitors a month the world's most popular Hip Hop website. Each of them expressed interest in promoting the comic and album (Spring 2010) on their website since it’s such a unique concept.
Steps to take:
1. Find the Deams poster with empty character, pose, take a picture and fill out the missing text.
2. Upload the photo to at least 3 social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace profile picture;
3. Include The Legacy EP promo video in a status update on your social network page
4. Upload the photo and provide links to your promo to the special page on the Deams website and fill out the application.
The best photo with text wins.

‘The Legacy comic contest’ serves as a cross media strategy that will also reach people that might have not know about Deams through traditional music channels. Some will just like the idea of being immortalized in a comic but at the same time discover Deams’ music in an innovative way.
Besides fans, businesses will also have the opportunity to get their products placed in the comic as a new way of advertising.
Social Media and street promotion is heavily used to spread the contest/comic/album within one concept, taking cross media and interactivity with fans to the next level, and at the same time bringing Deams to the attention of music fans worldwide.
