The first band to receive the award was VanKatoen. The Dutch band applied with a concept where e-mail is connected to zip code. By this VanKatoen can send localised e-mail to fans world wide (for example a newsletter which annouces a gig in your city).
They built up a database of 70.000 email addresses doing so. More about VanKatoen's concept you'll read on the 2008-edition page. Also check out the presentation of their concept on YouTube. The 2008 Award-site has loads more about that year's edition.
The score's were close but eventually Silence is Sexy took the price home with their concept of using torrents as a successful marketing tool!
By coöperating with the largest torrent site Mininova Silence is Sexy could distribute their music on a large scale. Their album was downloaded over 15.000 times in less then two months. Besides the downloads they got a huge amount of media coverage.
